Scoring Fantasy Adventure Games is a self-paced course in composing music for fantasy and adventure games, built around a case study of Heroes of Incredible Tales 2. In five video parts (4 hours 20 minutes), AAA game composer Jeff Broadbent breaks down his music for the game: how its themes and motifs are built, the harmony beneath them, what the orchestra, vocals, and solo instruments each contribute, and how the score creates a sense of place, heroism, and danger, from quiet exploration to full-scale battle.
Participants take a short quiz after each part. They then compose original, finished music for a fantasy or adventure game of their own design, and the amount of music sets the credit, from a one-minute main theme (1 unit of GLEC) up to a full set of 10 minutes 30 seconds (7 units) with a main theme, a looping exploration track, a looping battle theme, and fanfares and transitions. Every piece is mixed and mastered and comes with a short design note that names the techniques used.
To earn GLEC or CEUs, every participant completes all five parts, scores at least 70% on each quiz, and submits every project in their credit option. GLEC participants then receive a letter grade: the five quizzes count for 10%, and the projects share the other 90% in proportion to their length. Each project is scored with a five-part rubric: thematic and harmonic craft; orchestration and sound; game function (mood, looping, and pacing); mix, master, and delivery; and the design note. Letter grades: A 90–100%, B 80–89%, C 70–79%, D 60–69%, F below 60%.
This is an independent Best Music Coach course that uses the game's music as a case study. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the game's developer or publisher.
